PIANO SOLO
COLIN ROSE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP CLASS
This class is held annually in memory of Colin Rose. As a twelve year-old, Colin showed promise as a pianist. He was studying at the Grade Eight level when leukemia tragically took his life. The award is valued at $400.00
ELIGIBILITY
- Competitors must be 12 or 13 years of age as of December 31 of the preceding year.
- Competitors may not have completed Level 8 and above in their studies.
- Previous winners may not compete again for this scholarship.
- RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT. The participant must be a resident of Regional Municipality of York and the Town of Bradford/West Gwillimbury or the participant’s teacher must have a studio in the Regional Municipality of York and the Town of Bradford/West Gwillimbury.
NOTE:
- All competitors will receive their adjudication as in all other competitive classes.
- When competing in other Level 7 classes, competitor may not use either piece of his selected set in the other classes. In order words, a piece can only be played once in the festival.

DALE JACKSON MEMORIAL JAZZ PIANO SCHOLARSHIP CLASS
The Newmarket Lioness Club has established this class in memory of Dale Jackson who had a love of Jazz Piano. The award is given at two levels.
ELIGIBILITY
- Previous winners of this class may not compete again for this scholarship at the same level.
- RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT. The participant must be a resident of Regional Municipality of York and the Town of Bradford/West Gwillimbury or the participant’s teacher must have a studio in the Regional Municipality of York and the Town of Bradford/West Gwillimbury.
NOTE:
- Repertoire: One piece in jazz or popular style.
- Performance of the selected piece must incorporate a prominent improvisation component.
- Printed music (full score or lead sheet) that the performance is based on must be presented to the adjudicator on the day of the performance. Either a lead sheet or full score is acceptable.
- When competing in other classes, competitor may not use the same piece in another class.

KAREN BARKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
For many years, Karen Barker worked tirelessly to make the Newmarket Lions’ Club Music Festival a magnet for musical excellence in York Region. As a volunteer and later as the Festival administrator, Karen’s work has ensured the success the Festival enjoys today. Karen studied piano as a young girl and although she enjoyed all forms of music, piano continued to be a favourite. Karen was a member of the Newmarket Lions’ Club and was involved with the Festival for over twenty-five years.
Upon Karen’s passing, her family established the Karen Barker Memorial Scholarship to honour her memory. The award is given to a senior pianist who best presents their chosen programme as described in the section below. The award is currently valued at
$500.00.
The adjudicator determines the winner of the award and the decision is final. A minimum mark of 85 on overall adjudication.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Previous winners may not compete again for this scholarship.
- RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT. The participant must be a resident of Regional Municipality of York and the Town of Bradford/West Gwillimbury or the participant’s teacher must have a studio in the Regional Municipality of York and the Town of Bradford/West Gwillimbury.
PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS:
- Candidates must perform four pieces from memory at a minimum of grade 9 (Conservatory) level.
- While the choice of which piece to perform is left to the competitor, all pieces chosen must be on a current conservatory list.
- Programme length is not to exceed thirty minutes.
- Balance of program will be considered.
- Program must include:
- A Bach Prelude and Fugue
- A contemporary original work by a Canadian composer.
- The competitor will be asked to sight read a piece that is provided by the adjudicator.
- Each candidate must also answer a Viva Voce question asked by the adjudicator.
